Playable Classics: Privacy Policy
Effective: 2 November 2026
This covers the Playable Classics app for iPhone and Android.
A.1 The short version
- You don't make an account. The app doesn't ask for your name or other personal details. If you request deletion, you can email us with your anonymous install number; you do not need to include a name or any other personal detail.
- We collect two things: which parts of a story are read, and crash reports. We use them only to make the app better.
- Neither is tied to you. Reading statistics carry a random number created by the app, not your name, your phone's advertising ID or anything else that identifies you. Crash reports don't include that number or your name. We don't track you across other apps or websites, and we don't sell or share your data for advertising.
- You can switch it off at any time, in the app's settings.
- If you email us to request deletion, we receive the sender address and anonymous install number in that message. We use them only to handle the request; they are not added to reading analytics.
Playable Classics is made by James Alex Msekela ("we"). Questions: playableclassics.support@gmail.com.
A.2 What we collect
1. Reading progress. When you reach a new scene or page of a story, or finish a scene, the app records:
- what happened: a scene opened, a page reached, or a scene finished;
- which story, scene and page, as short codes such as
frankenstein,scene-twoandb3, and their numbers in order.
With every one of those records, the app adds:
- a random install number, made the first time you open the app (see §A.3);
- a random session number, which changes after 30 minutes without reading;
- the app version;
- the platform: iPhone, Android or web;
- the time.
The app never sends anything else with these records. It checks every record against a fixed list of allowed fields before sending, and drops anything that is not on the list, anything longer than 64 characters, and anything that looks like an email address.
2. Crash reports. If the app crashes, it sends a technical report:
- the error type, a generic error message and the code location (stack frames);
- the app release, platform and time.
The app removes device and user context, breadcrumbs, screenshots, view hierarchy attachments and session replay. Sentry's React Native SDK runs with sendDefaultPii off, screenshots and view hierarchy attachments off, and session replay sampling off.
3. Added by our providers. The PostHog SDK can add automatic device properties while preparing an event. The app's final send filter removes those automatic properties and sends only the fields listed above. The SDK is also configured with automatic person properties off.
The app, reading events and crash reports don't collect:
- your name, email, phone number, contacts or photos;
- your location;
- your phone's advertising ID;
- anything you type (the app has nowhere to type);
- what you do in other apps or websites.
If you email a deletion request, we receive the address you send it from and the anonymous install number you include. We use them only to respond and delete matching reading statistics; we don't add the address to analytics.
Internet addresses. Like any internet service, our providers see your device's IP address when it connects. We set them not to store it. Sentry's "Prevent Storing of IP Addresses" and PostHog's "Discard client IP data" settings are on. PostHog's GeoIP enrichment is off.
A.3 The random install number
- It is created by the app, from random digits. It is not your phone's advertising ID, hardware ID or any other ID that exists outside this app.
- What it lets us do: count how many readers reach each scene, without knowing who they are.
- Where it is kept: on your device (on the web, in your browser's local storage).
- How to remove it: uninstall the app or clear the site's data, or switch sharing off (§A.6). You can also ask us to delete reading statistics linked to this number (§A.8).
A.4 Why we collect it
Only to improve Playable Classics:
- where readers stop;
- which scenes hold them;
- whether they finish;
- what makes the app crash.
We don't use it for advertising, we don't build a profile of you, and we don't sell it.
A.5 Who handles it, and our legal basis
- Crash reports: Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), stored in the EU. The project uses Sentry's EU region.
- Reading statistics: PostHog, stored in the EU (PostHog EU Cloud, Frankfurt).
They handle the data only on our behalf, under data-processing agreements. We share it with no one else, unless the law requires us to.
For readers in the EU and UK: we rely on our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the app, limited to data that doesn't identify you and that you can switch off.
A.6 Switching it off
Open the app's settings and switch off "Share anonymous reading and crash data".
- From then on, nothing is sent from that device or browser.
- Records waiting to be sent are deleted, not sent.
- The random install number is deleted. If you switch sharing back on, the app makes a new, unrelated one.
A.7 What stays on your device
The app keeps these on your device only:
- where you are in the story, so you can carry on;
- your settings: sound, motion, and whether sharing is on;
- the random install number;
- any records waiting to be sent.
We use no cookies. On the web these are kept in your browser's local storage. Deleting the app, or clearing the site's data, deletes them.
The privacy policy is at https://playable-classics-legal.pages.dev/privacy.
A.8 How long we keep it
- Reading statistics: up to one year on PostHog's Free plan (PostHog pricing).
- Crash reports: 30 days on Sentry's Developer plan (Sentry pricing).
Asking us to delete your reading statistics. In Settings, open Your anonymous data and copy the random install number. Email playableclassics.support@gmail.com and include that number. We use it to find and delete matching reading statistics in PostHog. You do not need to provide your name or other personal details. We cannot use this number to find crash reports; those are not linked to it and are kept for the period stated above. Switching sharing off (§A.6) deletes the number from your device and clears records that have not yet been sent. Already-sent statistics remain until we delete them on request or the retention period ends.
A.9 Children
Playable Classics is not made for children under 13. We don't knowingly collect anything that identifies a child, and we don't collect anything that identifies anyone.
A.10 Security
Everything is sent encrypted (HTTPS). Our providers store it under their own security programmes.
A.11 Changes
If what we collect changes, we will update this page, and its date, before the new version of the app is released.
